Book Review + Book Giveaway: Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle

Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances is exactly what I needed this week. It's rough, sometimes, reading all sorts of great but disturbing young adult lit and teaching students who often have disturbing things happening in their lives. Sometimes, I need a break. This book was it.

There are very few books that have caused me to laugh out loud. That said, ALL of John Green's books have made me at least chuckle, if not completely bust out and get a little red in the face. Green's novella, "A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle" definitely had me grinning, chuckling, reading parts aloud to my husband, had a couple near-tearworthy moments. He is just so very cool. Love him. I'd read anything that he wrote. He's impossibly talented and witty and just plain good with things like character and plot and dialogue.

The other two stories are good, too. The first, by Maureen Johnson, really started the story in a great, catastrophic way. It's about a Christmas Eve night in a Southern town. Unfortunately for all of the busy travelers and all of the characters in this book, a freakishly huge snowstorm causes major upheaval. Thus begins a wild night of chance meetings, break-ups, confessions, parents getting arrested while Christmas shopping, cheerleaders practicing splits in waffle houses, the antics of a man covered in tinfoil, and lots and lots of other anomalies.

All of three of the stories are interconnected, but each sounds like the author who wrote it. I definitely loved John Green's the most, but the others were good, too. It was lighthearted and silly and warm and full of hope. Kinda how Christmas Eve should be.

I am giving away my (used) copy of this book to one lucky commenter from the US. This giveaway will close on December 14th. If you're interested in winning this book, please leave a comment stating what you love best about winter. Because I love winter and can't wait for lots of snow to come!

What I love best about winter? It's a tie between drinking hot chocolate on a snowy day and being able to dress for the cold (I love scarves and coats)

I guess the hot chocolate is the best part!

    Great giveaway!

  2. Ha-ha. We must of hit Publish at the same second on our reviews of this book. I, too, loved it. It was just what I needed, too. I've been reading such heavy duty books that I needed something light, yet poignant. Great review!

  3. This was one of my favorite holiday reads last year and I will be giving it away in a contest in a few days. Too funny! This isn't a comment to win, just stop by to say hi! I really think we may need to compare reading lists some time.

  5. Oooh, I really want this book.

My favorite part of winter was always the snow. Unfortunately, I've lived in SoCal for the past five years and it doesn't exactly snow here (CUE TEARS), so my favorite part of winter HERE is generally getting to go back to my hometown for a week or so during December and seeing my cousins/family.

  6. Actually I have a lot of reasons for loving winter. First, is the snow and the days off I get because of them. There is nothing more fun than waking up to a surprising white blanket of wet snow and finding out I get to stay in my jammies all day instead of dressing for work.

Another reason I love winter is because I don't have to worry about all the hot flashes I get. While I can't wear sweater much, I also don't have to be too concerned with bundling up to face the icy chill of December, January, and February. Definitely saves on buying coats.

Finally I am a December baby and while I don't enjoy getting another year older, it is fun to share my birthday with my sister (also a December baby) It is one time she and I get together and laugh while we celebrate each other.

Thanks for the chance to win this book, I am a huge fan of John Green so this is exciting!

  12. Winter, oh Winter ... to be honest, the first snow was on Monday morning and I woke up my roommate by screaming it was the begining of the end and running around the flat in my pjs, lamenting the end of Fall.

Much later (Thursday) I met up with a girlfriend and we skated - then I remembered the good things about WInter - the hot cocoa and skating, the mittens and snow forts, the snowpeople and the holidays - love winter! :D

    Thanks for the contest! :)

  13. Oh I so want this book!!!

My favorite part about winter is having time set aside to celebrate with family and friends. The rest of the year can get so busy, but people always make time for the important people in their lives aaround the holidays.

p.s. I also love seeing all of the decorations locals towns and cities put up to decorate for the holidays.

  24. We don't really have a 'winter'. I like living vicariously watching others have their snow and cold. As for me, the most I wear is a sweater or a hoodie to keep warm.

  26. I have to admit that I hate the cold and the snow. What I love about winter though is the decorations, hot chocolate, the excuse to stay cuddled up inside.
